About HISAW

Founded by a Registered General Nurse who witnessed too many preventable falls and crises. HISAW exists to change that story.

Why I created HISAW

HISAW was established by a Registered General Nurse who worked as an Emergency Nurse with the National Health Service (NHS) and the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS).

In these roles, she witnessed multiple cases of older people sustaining falls and becoming unwell for reasons that were entirely foreseeable and preventable.

Inevitably, many of these falls lead to unscheduled hospital admissions, often accompanied by further physical and mental deterioration. The saddest cases involve people who lie on the floor for hours or even days before being discovered. Lying on the floor for long periods without being able to get up or summon help is a terrifying experience that can lead to serious clinical complications — yet it is entirely preventable.

Often, the cause of the fall is something simple and avoidable, such as trip hazards in the home, inadequate footwear, medication changes or polypharmacy, and poor lighting. Simple changes around the home — including the use of technology — together with adjustments to healthcare routines, can significantly reduce the risk of falls. Even modest lifestyle changes can help protect against frailty, delirium, and type 2 diabetes, while straightforward measures can make a home more dementia-friendly.
